Family Night

From October 2009

Last night was William's first Family Night at Immanuel Lutheran Preschool.  All the children in the three year old classes came together with their families in the basement.  It was nostalgic for me as I remember doing this with Erin and William was the baby in my lap.  I remember being a first time parent, thinking about how amazing it was that my daughter was in preschool and I had this lovely little baby boy who would go there one day as well.

Now the time is here - I can't believe how quickly the time flies.  Erin is a willowy first grader growing in her permanent teeth and my 'baby' is coloring his own picture of himself.  Mrs. Stumpf has the children do the same activity each year.  We trace the children's body on a large piece of paper, they color in their clothing and then we write descriptive words for each letter of their name.  I don't know which part is my favorite.  I love watching him color, which he rarely does.  Compared to his sister at that age who meticulously colored each part of her body, making sure she had the flowers right and the designs on her shoes just right.  He scribbled his brains out, picking all the colors himself without anything being similar to what he was actually wearing.  Their individuality is such a gift from God.

I also love brainstorming the descriptive words for each letter of his name.  Needless to say William doesn't have much to do with this part besides providing the stamp of approval.  Erin: "William, what about 'interesting' for the 'i', do you think your interesting?" "Sure, Erin."  We have so much fun coming up with ideas and it is only better this year since Erin can spell and come up with many of the words herself.  She and I took turns as the scribe as William oversaw the process.
