Is anyone here a lighting designer?

Clearly I never gave much thought to lighting.  I know it is important and I like a lot of it.  I have watched enough episodes of This Old House to know all about lighting designers.  But I thought that was just for the rich folks who needed up-lighting and down-lighting and high-lighting and all over lighting. We aren't those folks.  Just throw a few cans in the ceiling and let's close this thing up.

Our contractor told us that he had some great ideas for lighting that were different from what the architect drew on our plans.  We figured he'd built enough houses and let him do the design and implementation.  As far as we were concerned, it was one less thing to worry about.  Turns out that was a mistake.  We came home to find a VERY dimly lit kitchen (we knew Deb would refuse to cook in such a dark kitchen!).  As a result, we spent an inordinate amount of time the next two nights measuring and mocking up different lighting layouts.  It was exhausting to both of us.  Day two of our discussion Jim brought out 6" and 4" can light drawings and we taped them up on the ceiling.  Holy smokes, if I don't talk about lighting again it will be too soon.  And honestly I don't think our solution is great but it is going to be good enough.
