Not being a teacher I have never had the opportunity to witness a child go through the amazing process of learning to read and write. It is akin to unlocking a secret code and then a whole new world is available. Erin was reading a few words this summer and some very simple books but since first grade has begun her knowledge has exploded. They are doing journals at school and she loves this process. She now has her own 'journal' at home in her nightstand where she can write her own stories.
Yesterday we went downtown to see a play, The Hundred Dresses, at the
Chicago Children's Theatre. We had a wonderful time and after discussing the play she said she was going to write her own story. So she curled up her legs in her car seat and began to think about her story. I did help with some of the spelling, but the entire story was her idea. Not bad for a first grader!
the end.
